I want some easy to breed and feed feeders for my gar and bichirs. Im thinking silvertails but I dont really know much about breeding them and stuff. I heard ghost shrimps are great feeders but the young are hard to raise. Any suggestions? I am planning on keeping them in a 10 gal tank set up with a sponge filter and would be breeding them there as well. Would that be alright? Thanks!

tilapia... depending on the size of the fish.. you're going to need more then a 10 to accomidate the feeding of either species for more then an occasional snack. a single 12" florida gar can eat 50 2" fish in a week easily ime.

*swordtails. haha. Tilapia? Can't I breed smaller fish? Some swordtails have managed to breed in my gar tank and now my gar's sharing the tank with lots of babies. I need some that wpuld grow easily. Or I could just do what others do, buy fish and quarantine them then feed them after a week in qt?

no feeder fish are the best, and even if you quarantine them there is still the chance of your fish getting sick, with that being said, i would do mollies guppies and/or swordtails

Do folks really think that the pace of breeding and growing out any fish in a 10g tank will be enough to feed a couple of large fish?

It takes a couple of months, minimum, for livebearers to get to ~1"...

Go with red wiggler worms or the like.

I dont plan on making the feeders their staple diet. I just want to add to the variety of food they eat and feed some every time I get big ones. Im not a fan of poorly treated feeder fish from lfss so I wanted to breed my own. It would also help maintain my 10 gal cause its in my room and I dont know what to do with it after my bichirs out grow it. I cant think of anything to keep in it except for feeders or maybe a small salamander.

There is no sure way to answer your question, why risk the health of your fish just to make everything cheaper? AFAIK, breeding feeder fishes requires you to have multiply tanks. Most likely three: one for the adults, one for the babies (as the adults usually eat the smaller ones) and another for sick ones, and breeding them in a 10 gal tank will most probably give you sick ones and it will cost you a lot.

Okay so a 10 is too small. Can I just use the tank for a qt? Or should I just not risk the health of my animals and just train them to eat fillets from the market?
