what is the best filtration system for a 300 gallon fish tank. im about to get one for my fish. i was thinking about a wet/dry filter or a canister filter. im on a budget

Depends what your stocklist is and how much money you can spend. If your tank is pretty stocked I would definetly go with a wet/dry. You can build one yourself, just check the DIY section. The return pump for the wet/dry should also be able to fit your bugget since you only need about 2-3 times turn over ratting. I would also go with a canister filter along with the wet/dry.

Fluval FX5 gives the most bank for the buck. A hot set-up would be to use 2 of them.

Since your on a budget and FX5 cost an arm and a leg, i would definitely go with a wet/dry. Check on craigslist cause you can get one for about $70 used. The return pumps aren't that expensive either on there. Just keep checking and you'll find a good deal. With the $$$ you saved, you can add an extra canister filter....:headbang2

wet drys are the cheapest option but also give you the most versatile filter set up, just find something big enough add a prefilter, a load of media and the pump and your set.

I honestly would not recommend getting the fx5, I've read some bad reviews on them about not being able to last more than 3 years. They also are unable to filter out smaller particles because of the sponges and clog fast if you try to use a fine filter pad. Try an xp4 or eheim 2260 but the eheim might be out of your budget.

If YOU havent used a product, YOU shouldn't make reccomendations on for or against it. Give the FACTS about the item, and leave it at that.

As far as FX5s being costly, they sure are if you buy them from petsmart. But if you look hard enough, you can find them for a bit more than $150 online. Hardly costly

It's a good filter in my book. Like everything there are downsides. You dont want to use polishing pads unless you want weekly filter maitenance. Put all your biomedia in the FX5 and run an Aquaclear 110 full of fine foam.
