If it's a bog...Cattails and their associated microorganisms improve water and soil quality. They render organic pollution harmless, remove heavy metals and fix atmospheric nitrogen, bringing it back into the food chain. They've even been planted along the Nile river to reduce soil salinity.

And they're edible too. (don't know if I want to eat something that removes heavy metals).

I like the idea of cat tails. They are easy to find and hard to kill.

Researchers at Disney's Animal Kingdom had been growing cucumbers hydroponically. They only grew one plant at a time and were able to get them to cover over an acre. Each harvest yielded over 1000 cucumbers. They were of course on a very religious feed/water cycle. I am going to try them with a continuous flow from my pool.

wow chompers, thats impressive. I have a cucumber (only small, planted last week) aquaponically with some silver perch. I hope mine grows as well as that!!

We will have to compare notes when we both get them going. My pool is stocked with tadpoles, koi, and plecos.

Ok...CHOMPERS...dannyboy, you need to take this to a private room...NO ONE WANTS TO SEE EITHER OF YOUR CUCUMBERS, let alone the two of you comparing them! :banhim:
    .

Name withheld because I'm ashamed.

I had problems with root rot when trying to raise cucumbers aquaponically. Hydroponically there was no problem, using a feed and drain system. Seems the roots needed air to dry out somewhat. Lettuce did work well tho. Couldn't bring myself to grow strawberries... Eating them after knowing what they were water with and all...

Im using an autosiphon to hopefully overcome this problem. The pot slowly fills up with water, and then when the auto siphon kickes in it dumps all the water, and hopefully lets the roots dry out enough

oh and hopefully my cucumbers are bigger ;) but look forward to seeing your setup chompers

I just drilled some holes in the plastic covers that fit over some 20 gallon tanks. I took some rooted vinca plants that I grabbed from the home despot for a dollar and washed the potting soiless mix out of the roots. These I then stuck through the holes in the lids with about 50% of the root mass immersed in water and the rest in free air. I'm hoping that this set-up will allow the roots to breathe and draw water and nutrients from the tank below. The plants are being lit by two 40W T8 grow light flourescant lamps.
Anyone tried these plants yet?
