You should check out the tankmates sticky. There's alot of good stories. Alot of tragedies and some happy stories (though you have to wonder how long they were able to remain tankmates).

Speaking of tankmates, i just watched my pleco chase off a red to get a pellet.

well first off, most piranhas actually come from areas where there are very little plants, so the heavily planted jungle look wouldn't really mimic their natural environment, but if that's the look you like, go with it.

I dare to differ. Just check out Plant Earth Fresh Water, the making of. If I remember correctly, you'll see tons of pirayas in what I would call a jungle ... besides, plants will help with the water quality.

those are s. maculatus feeding in clear water, i wouldn't really call it a jungle, just some ground cover and some floating plants.

there's nothing wrong with having a planted tank with piranhas, i have some myself, i was just saying that if you want to replicate their environment, a heavily planted dutch-style aquarium wouldn't really be considered accurate.

While we're talkin about this subject. Are reds really easier to keep or are they just always recommended to beginners because they're more easily accessible and cheaper? We often recommend reds for beginners but are they really any harder to keep then cariba, piraya, ternetzi etc etc? The solo species i agree would be different as most people probably shouldn't start off with a huge tank with only one fish unless they're really into the hobby.

they all are pretty hardy and require similar care, but p. cariba and p. piraya will require bigger tanks due to their larger size and they cost a lot more. someone new to the hobby could get discouraged pretty quick if they lost a couple $50 cariba or $100 piraya as opposed to a $5 natt.

I suppose all of this is in vain anyhow... I just looked on the map and Nevada is one of the "RED" states. I doubt any self respecting business owner would send them to me anyway. THIS SUCKS!!! NO STINGRAYS!!! NO GARS!!! AND NO PIRANHAS!!! WTF??? It's not like a released RBP could survive 40 degree water temps in the winters of Nevada's lakes or streams... WHY THE HELL ARE THE NV DFG SO DAMN PARANOID!!!???

^ will be edited for suggesting transfering an illegal species beyond state lines but you can order them from several different websites
