best rock for malawi tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would love texas holy rock but its sooo expensive, so i use river rock and boulder. my africans seem to think its cool.

i thought holey rock was limestone? i have seen tons of established breeding tanks full of old live rock wich i thought was limestone?

Yes live rock, is basically limestone (when using them in a freshwater environment), and yes texas holey is basically limestone also. There is nothing wrong with limestone if you are shooting for PH ~7.6 or whatever the magic number is. Just use what you like best, then just know that with stones that are like limestone they will leach so your water parameters will change over time. Unlike if you use something like Lace Rock (volcanic) that is basically inert and you set water ph and such by adding Seachem products with the water.

I use Lace w/ a couple rivers and a handful of slate for caves. I also use small PVC fittings. I got the fitiings in the irrigation dept. because they are a black and dark gray color. Covered w/the rock.

i use crushed coral for my substrate and limestone rocks to make my caves and decorations. The fish seem to love it and i have had no problems

Me too. I actually have coral sand substrate with limestone rock combined with some rounded boulders (non limestone) to make caves with slate, some granite and petrified wood.

I also have a huge piece of driftwood that reaches near the top of the tank as well as lots of plants....
