can anyone tell me if it's possible to breed regular betta's with giant betta's? i decided to give it a shot, they go thru all the motions like a regular betta spawning, even up to the embrace. male gets the eggs, brings them up to the nest, and starts guarding. but the eggs never hatch. i'm beginning to think he may be shooting blanks, the female has been bred with a betta s. before so i'm pretty sure it's not her.

why would you want to cross breed a giant with a normal sized betta? i dont see the point other than to weaken the strain thats already quite unusual, seems an odd practice to me.

to get a giant betta with good colors. some medicine can make males infertile temp to low maybe the male doesnt fert them good. it could be anything try to hatch the eggs yourself in a seperate container

To my knowledge, splendens can only breed with imbellis. Even if the genes were right 2 bettas need to be of a very similar size to breed, otherwise they usually kill eachother.

Yes Bettas with the GIANT strain can breed with bettas without the giant strain, the genetics of the same species of fish will not hinder the breeding. However if you are just wanting to attempt breeding bettas, you may want to start with some cheap veiltails, just make sure they are healthy. Then once you get more experienced, move up to Crowntails, DTs, etc. There are some really helpful resources out there, this website has everything you need to know about bettas. www.bettatalk.com Faith Granger is great! Seriously everything you need to know about bettas. I am also a member of the international betta congress www.ibcbetas.com ANother awesome website and an awesome scientific organization devoted to bettas. However I do lots of other fish and inverts too, of all kinds and types! ^_^ My Iridescent sharks I recently got being my first real MONSTER FISH!! I read they can get to 3 FEET!!! :headbang2
HELL YEAH!! :FIREdevil Hope I can get em there. But if you need to know anything about bettas go to bettatalk, or just ask me, thats mah specialty man. I am getting a degree in Icthyology and IBC research for B. Splen

Betta anabatoides is the same species as Betta splendens? I too am going to school to study aquatic biology, but I've been out of the betta loop for a few years. Is this new information? Are there any scientific papers that you know of that I could read? Since one is twice the size of the other and a mouthbrooder, how do they get them to breed?

Well all Betta species are anabantoid yes, and as for scientific information the IBC is the greatest place to find that. But like I mentioned above, the breeder Faith Granger is great, as is her site, www.bettatalk.com You can find alot of good information about betta there, I meant ALOT!

I went to both those sites and couldn't find any info about breeding Betta s and Betta a to eachother. Anabantoid is a name for a group of fish that includes bettas and gouramis. Most fish in that group cannot breed with eachother. Could you direct me to the page that says they can breed together, if you find it? Thanks.
