Black diamond blasting sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was just looking this stuff up last night. Lol
I want to try sand but have never used any before. Just Incase I hate it I don’t want to spend a lot.

Do you think instead of rinsing in a bucket that washing it on a window screen would work? How small is it?
Mind posting a picture with some spread out on your hand?
I think a window screen can't hurt but this stuff seems like it needs tons of rinsing I'll take a pic tonight.

Turn off the filter and airpump (if you have one)
Then after 30 min take a net and go around collection everything that is floating....
Through it away
Repeat till it looks good. ;):)

Once the blasting sand has been in the tank a while it isn't that light. It'll move the same as any other sand. I had a similar problem in the beginning with floating sand and a small bit of a film, but turning on the pump and running for a few days and it was totally clear. All I had to do was open my canister and empty a little pit of it out of the bottom of the canister during a normal cleaning. Since then its never in the filter and really only moves when the fish move it or I disturb it during cleaning. It will settle and become more solid and heavy once all the air bubbles are out of the sand.

Thx for the feedback

Nice....how many pounds did you use and what size tank is that?

It’s a 220 and I bought 200lbs for it, but I only used 150lbs. I could have probably only put 100lbs in and it would be just fine, but at the time I set it up I was thinking I might add some plants that root into the substrate. That just never really planned out though.

That's interesting I feel like my 125 with 100lb is not enough sand. Could be different tank depths. I'll go take a picture of it. I hear ya on planted tanks. I'm looking forward to not having any live plants in this tank since all my other tanks are heavily planted.
