garain size is the most important quality of sand...

Stuff that is very fine will swoosh into filters easily causing problems... heavier stuf is better at staying Astronotus Ocellatus on the bottom where you want it...

Any sand should be rinsed. no matter how well it is sieved by the manufacturer, during shipping it is going to rub against itself and cause some dust... Naturally the amout of dust formed during shipping will vary from bag to bag. So just because one person's bad didn't have much (or any) dust doesn't mean they will all be that way...

I have used Tahitian Moon Sand and found it to be much finer than the pool fiotler sand I was accustom to and I chose not to use it for long. Although I have read where many other's have used it and felt happy with their experience... Yet I cannot comment on how long they used it when they stated they were happy with it, or if they later changed their opinion...

I called all of the 3m distributors around LA.Socal.They still carry 3 m sand. But won't sale them to public.(wholesale only)
Is pool filter sand just as good of 3m T grade sand or finer?

The exact grain size of Pool Filter Sand may vary from brand to brand... but for sand to be safely used in a pool filter it must be fairly large grained and must be consistent in grain size...


I've used several brands of pool filter sand and all of them have worked great for aquarium use...

Pool filter sand is meant to be used inside of a filter... therefore there is no reason for them to alter the natural color in any way...

Pool Filter Sand will typically be broken down Sand Stone... which varies from a light brown to an off white... with medium to light tan being the most common color...


Colored sand will either be ground rock of that color, or dyed sand.

Sand isn't that easy to dye... and birbrant colored rocks are much less common... black rocks that will not affect water quality are not so common... Which is why sand other than brown/tan/off-white are mroe expensive...
