I just Switched to black sand from white It was a startling difference for me. I surely like the black. Still torn on background though My go with a deep deep blue ( I work for pepsi and our print shop makes giant static stickers using loads of Pepsi blue, shocker right?. I may try to snag some from them) Really prefer the black.

Black background is always my "go to", I've gone with black sand and white sands before. Both look lovely, I've even thoroughly mixed them in tank once years ago for a grey/ash colored look.

For my betta tank i used a piece of 'dragon rock' as a background on the one short side as the other 3 sides are always visible. It just depends on what you want to achieve, like for my 75 long i have a rocky sort of background paper with natural gravel and am busy filling it with plants and it looks great for my fish that don't scream colour
