So I know I’ve seen a post on here somewhere about the alternatives to the aquarium grade black sand, but that thread was old. Any way I wanted to know if anyone used and had success with the black diamond sand blasting media. I recall people said it had a high amount of iron in it and that could kill fish, anyone find that true? Or if anyone found a better substitute what was that?
I am scaping a 240g so 8 ft by 2 ft and I’d like a good layer to help secure driftwood and plants so I would need 360 pounds according to a calculator. At $25 for a 20 pound bag, that’s $450 for just the sand!!!
I guess now when you see the video titles that say something like “$1,000,000 aquarium” you know 1/4 of that cost is in sand?

I use the black diamonds blasting sand in several of my tanks for years without issue.
Planted tanks , fish only. I’ve kept Geos and corydoras, loaches and other catfish and even puffers without any problems.

Here is my old 220 that I did using Black Diamond. Just rinse it really well and when you think your done rinse for about 10 more minutes lol.
loved it tho, never had an issue with it even with bottom dwellers.

You're getting ripped off if you're paying 25 for 20lbs. It's usually 10-15$ for a 50lb bag. Maybe lil more now due to inflation.

Also had no problem with it. Changed it out cuz I didn't like the brown clear sand mixed in. U can see it from the pics above.

Sweet! Thank you all! I’ll probably go with the black diamond. I’d love to support my LFS but it’s just too much.
