Bloat!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I forgot to mention the Bloat was caused by overfeeding. This is my first African Cichlid tank and I wasn't aware they shouldn't be fed as often as I used to feed my saltwater tank.

Then, no need to treat. Cut back on feeding and start with high fiber diet.

I will be very surprised if I don't lose every single cichlid in my tank. At least I know what the early warning signs are so hopefully there will not be a next time. Funny thing is not one of my fish actually bloated up.

I am thinking that is going to be the cause. A week before I lost my first fish I bought some frozen blood worms as a treat. Barely broke the seal on the package and now this.

Bloodworms are quite high in protein and protein is very difficult for vegetarians to digest. What are you feeding right now? I told you earlier a high fiber diet is most needed here.

Thanks for the description, Oddball.

I noticed yesterday that one of my silver/gray sailfin mollies looks all bloated from the gills through chest/stomach area. He's been keeping low and hiding in areas recently. Last week he and another fish looked listless and keeping to the bottom and gasping for air.

As mollies get ick alot, I just treated mildly for three days and he is doing great, but the black male sailfin surprisingly ended up dead one morning. I've done water changes weekly. I feed them flakes only - regular tropical fish flakes, and the veggie flakes w/ algae used for mollies. I alternate those weekly. He does look like he ate too much, but didn't feed them for the day when I saw his fat little body.

I did add aquarium salt in the 10 gallon aquarium. Temp is 79-80.

I am not familiar with Epsom Salts. What is the difference in helping fish (I have sailfin mollies and guppies, primarily in different tanks). What would be the benefits and dosage per each 10 gallon?

Would Epsom Salts be good to use with my tiger/albino barbs, buenos aires tetras, red raspbora tetras, and the like in my 29 gal tank?

I don't know what to do for my pretty male molly... he looks huge... don't know the cause. Help, please!

And then there was 1...That is all that remains of my once 20 cichlids. Ironically enough it is a Yellow Lab that is left. From what I hear they usually are the first ones to succomb to bloat.

Here is a weird scenario, had a female Kenyi who was holding so I removed her from the tank before losing any fish. She was in a tank by herself for 3 weeks before releasing her babies. I put her back in the tank the same day I completed treating with Clout and she just died today.

I am not feeding anything right now...just hoping it goes away.
