No, not using a skimmer as a filteration system. It's mechanical. The 'skimmer is at the bottom of the suction tubes to prevent the fish from getting caught or sucked up the tube. In my fiasco, I did not place the skimmer on properly, causing my Jack Dempsy to knock it off. I do know crayfish are escape artist and well, one thing led to another.
Update on Mr. crabs:
2 days after moving him to his own tank I noticed he/ she did not seem right.... I check the tempature and Ph levels and all were in normal range. He/she wasn't moving or eating. I thought maybe he/she was about to molt so left him alone. Was no change and a few times I thought Mr.Crabs was dead. :/
I don't know why but decided to make a habitat for him/her in the cichlid tank. I then moved him/her back in... Almost immediately Mr.Crabs came back to life!
A couple of days ago I notice nice growth of his new claws. Today... I found 2 surprises.
1. He/she molted! Does look like the crayfish lost 2 legs but none of which had pinchers. 2. Within his little 'fake' plants and real rock habitat are 12 little baby fishes.... Apparently my peacock demseys are NOT both females lol.
I have decided not to bother trying to snatch them up. Mr. Crabs is thriving and so far none of the cichlids have been able to penetrate his fortress. I do know the babes are at risk from Mr.Crabs but for now safe due to their size. They are swimming around his head, lol and perhaps because he just molted he doesn't care. I will reassess the situation in a couple of days.
Question: I know I am not supose to remove the crayfish's shell as they will eat for nutrients. Anyone familiar with how long this may take? Should I remove after a certain time period? Mr.Crabs doesn't seem interested in it at all...
