Oregon, it's part of 'Murica!
I for the longest time have wanted to breed something with Blood Parrots ever since I started keeping them. I fell in love with Kilin/Kirin Parrots and decided to breed Flowerhorns with them, I finally came across a Bonsai Flowerhorn which happens to be male. So this thread is my little project of breeding them.

I put the male in with the females parrots and I noticed he was trying to get the largest female's attention. So I moved my Bearded Dragon out of the 55 gallon and set it up for them. Right now I as I type the female is chasing the other female round and the bonsai is joining in occasionally. I will move the loser female out after the pair has laid eggs or is close.

Butters (female black and orange parrot)
Peach (female orange parrot with normal mouth)
Unnamed Bonsai Flowerhorn (male)
Anyone think up any names for the male bonsai shout them out. I'm thinking something colorful or fruity like Skittles or something.

I will continue to update the thread as things progress.

Well the female is still rejecting the male. I think because he is smaller than her. They locked lips today but after awhile he turned tail. He still hanging around her though. I ordered a Kilin Parrot from Petzone and asked for a male. So if it doesn't work out with the Bonsai then I will try the Killin and if its a female then I will try to breed it with the Bonsai.

Can anyone give me any advice as to help them form a bond?

How big and how old are they? Seems quite young...take their breeding process as breeding FH. Best to have only 1 male and 1 female in a breeding tank only by the way.

I have only bred convicts and blood parrots (obviously no fry though) before so breeding flowerhorn is a bit new to me. The largest female parrot is 4" and has laid eggs before (bought her back on March 3rd at about 2"), the other female parrot is about 3.5" and has almost laid eggs but I moved her. The male bonsai is about 3.5" as well. I though he was a bit young too but my parrots tried to breed at younger ages.

I'd give your bonsai male a try at 5" if I were you. No need to order a new fish...and only 1 male and female for the process of breeding them. Take caution...

I will keep an eye one them. I didn't order the Kilin Parrot because of the Bonsai, I ordered it because I have always wanted one and I noticed Petzone finally got some in. I figured I could ask for a male as a backup or for another breeding project if its fertile.

My apologies here if that is what it is. Then I guess it is fine to do so, just make sure you know what to do with them afterward. Not many people like FH too much, actually so many hobbyist(in general) hates hybrids for some reason. But 99.9% of their dogs they own are mixed also, weird huh?...:D

I will keep him until he dies. I have grown attached to that little guy. I don't mind hybrids. So many people always have the same fish but with hybrids its a unique fish the you are most likely not gonna find in a store.

Do you know of any cases of kirin parrots being fertile?

To be honest, I'm not really sure what is the population number of kirin out there being a fertile male overall in the U.S. The only thing I know is that a buddy of mine is in the process of breeding his kirin male with a kirin female. It is proven fertile and the pair had successfully bred it once already, but he just toss them all at the LFS for credits for FH food. I'm still waiting for his MP kamfa breeding in the process currently also...then time to buy some frys. :D
