Bottom-feeder for Breeding Convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In response to your question, I'm NOT sure how many I will breed, but at this size, about 40 babies will survive at a time (going from past clutches), but they are the brightest red I have ever seen and are heterozygous for Pink, so I am breeding them to enhance already desirable qualities and try to get "High-red" Pink Convicts. Almost the entire dorsal fins are red on my females, I love it.

Will you be line breeding to try to get more red? I see you are from PA. What part of PA? I used to live in Philly.

putting anything in a 20 gallon with a breeding pair of convicts is not called for.

The 1st time, I believe they will be line bred.....of the 1.3 I have, the father was a Pink, so going by visual recessive rules, all offspring should be 100% heterozygous for Pink, therefore if I breed any of them together I will get half Pinks, the other half will "LOOK" normal but have a 66% chance of carrying/passing on the allele for Pink.

OR IF I could find a Pink , breeding a visual recessive to a het. recessive will also give me Pinks, just MORE Pinks and instead of the normal-looking offspring being 66% Heterozygous for Pink, they will be 100% since I would have used a visual recessive, rather than 2 Hets.
Pics or it never happened... Jk!
Damn you Pic-lovers. If you guys don't stop harassing me for pics!!!!.................

.....I might actually have to post some.

I know, I know....and I knew this was coming, but remember this is temporary and the parents will be moving around until I decide to separate them and retire them into one of my main tanks, one of which, a 125g is hopefully already on it's way. Trust me, I have a TON of tanks....maybe several tons when full :D

if i had to guess, i would think you're gonna do more harm than good. i would think that the extra waste produced by the bottom feeders would produce more nitrogen than any excess food left over from the fry.

and even temporally, there really is no reason to add punching bag fish because thats what you're doing in a tank that small.

I will take this into careful consideration. It's not a huge concern, I have plenty of filtration, possibly double what I need. The safety of the fry ARE, however.

So you think I should just wait until I remove the parents and add Corys or whatever?

this a contradiction i see often. you want to add clean up fish to your tank but you still have to feed them. and because you still have to feed your clean up crew, your clean up just contributes to the bioload.
if you want bottom feeders then add bottom feeders. don't expect them to help keep the tank "clean."
you can put an fx5 on a ten gallon, there will still be excess nitrogen in the tank.
if you wait to remove the parent, you can add whatever you want. but adding anything into a 20 gallon with a pair of convicts is cruel. the convicts are just going to relentlessly kick the hell out of them.

.....and this is why we ask questions :D The only stupid question is the one that is never asked.
