For the past six or seven months I've had a 72g tank on the floor because I haven't had the money for a new stand. On Friday I had a sand issue in that tank and had to remove all my substrate and dump my water (this is the second time since switching to sand a few months ago that the water went bad, so thats why I removed it all, and had to once again basically start from scratch). So because I dumped close to 600lbs of water and around 100lbs of sand I decided to bite the bullet and buy a tank stand while it was empty.

Petco was having a sale and I took a 75g rectangular stand for $140.00. The problem is, which I didn't realize till I got home, is that the stand is built to hold the weight of the tank on the rims (hopefully I'm explaining this right) the tank does not lay flat on the stand but on a raised edges so part of the bow of the tank is not supported. I placed books underneath that are flush to the bottom of the tank. Is there impending doom? Why do they even make tank stands this way?

Sorry for the book. Thanks for any input

I'm not at my apartment but I'll take a picture tonight. I't a wooden stand similar to the ones you see on the on the Petco website but it has a raised rim to it. At first I thought it was supposed to be a lip around the tank but it's not. The tank is meant to sit on this rim. I'll takes some pics tonight.

so, you have a tank with a rectangular footprint holding a bowfront tank right? the stand is fine, most stands are designed only to support the tank on the perimeter only. its fine.

but the middle of the tank (the widest part of the bow) is sticking out right?

I would return the stand and get a proper bowfront stand instead.

I wouldn't do it. Just get the right stand (as a carpenter I prefur to build them) because of the amount of weight potentially not being supported properly.

Unfortuantely thats what I was thinking as well, I just didn't have the heart to tell myself after all that work, my forearms are still killing me.
They didn't have any bow fronts, and the price was just too sweet. My 100g tank stand was home made and a 100x sturdier too bad it warped when my tank leaked out on me. here's the pics.

with stands like that the tank sits within the lip. you will break your tank more than likely by perching it like that. measure the area behind the lip and fill it with wood till you get a flat top for the tank to sit on.
the slight overhang of the bow wouldnt matter if the whole tank was sitting on a flat surface.

When I first took it out of the box that's what I thought. I should take some pics of the support underneath. There's no bracing in the middle .. at all. Plus the box states the measurements of the tank size it was made for, which is 48" x 18". That is my tank minus the front conners. I was also thinking what if I take the lip off so it will lay flat, but I still thik the distribution of weight would be the same because it's completely hollow undereath. I just need to chalk it up and take it off.
