Bowfishing???

I spite the comment "like shooting fish in a barrel" Its much more difficult than it looks, the arrows weigh 4-5 times what a typical arrow weighs and it has no feathers to act as rifling. you have to offset aim based on the angle of the light source and the debth of the fish... I also have a scar across my arm from Gar that tried to defend itself.

in reply to another comment- Carp are not a resource, they are ferrell and can be very damanging to an american waterway. some states employ sterilized Grass carp in waterways that have lush overgrowth and this is the only time the fish add any balance to the aquatic econamy.

I'm not personally all for the concept of bowfishing for gar or other native species but I do not have an issue with it as long as it is done in a manner that will not jeopardize the populations of these fish. A certain amount of harvesting of these fish is just fine so I see no reason to complain much about this..

I am however very into using an atlatl / dart system for removing carp from time to time. This is a freaking blast and the equipment is much cheaper, lighter and easier to carry. I frequently carry an atlatl and a few breakdown darts whenever I'm on the water and out in the field.

I highly suggest looking into atlatl fishing if your the type that wants something effective but really do not want to spend that much or carry a bunch of junk. Naturally check with local laws as not all states allow this..

like jd7.62 said most states limit the sport to non game species see the links on the first page to local F&G regulations. i'll have to look into tlhat atlatl thing, never seen it before, U got Pics? Most of Texas does not have a limit on carp or gar, because of their abundance, these fish are vigorous survivors, even in heavily polluted waters that other fish cannot tolerate. They have recently added cats to the list of bowable species (along with the same bag limit) for a trial period.

Thanks for the reply,
Wow that looks primitive. ill have to give that a shot when i get back to the states.
A bowfishing kit has a reel or some sort of line for retrieval, What do you have to do with that go for a swim? I wouldnt want to go in most of the water i hunt in.

I did not show one of my fishing darts but they are breakdown in nature and made of aluminum arrow shaft. A line is attached about midway with a Muzzy or 4 barb 'lil stinger' fish point attached...I use an old fly reel to hold the line.
