Brackish Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
damn that is a lot of mollies but what is that cichlid in the brackish water?
That's a Jack Dempsey, the ones from the Yucatan coast do very well in brackish water, as do xCichlasoma uropthalmus. I couldn't get a pic of the uros, they were in water over 20ft deep.
A pair of Jacks would hold territory about the size of an SUV in 4'to 15" of water.

They would chase any other cichlid out of their area, but ignore the mollies, other than trying to eat them.

damn impressive, I had read about jack dempseys and convicts doing well in brackish but right here is proof! and also what is that pupfish looking fish, with a seeming blue side, is that a yucatan pupfish aka checkered pupfish?

this is an intresting thread as i would love to have a nice comm tank with archer fish :)

The blue one is a young male Yucatan molly, the older males were the size of adult JDs and had even more electric colors. They also stayed in deeper water, 10' or more. Because of the intense sun, algae was abundant even in deeper waters and the mollies seemed to graze it constantly, as did the JDs.
You can see, the rocks are literally carpeted in algae, and because the water is so clear, it looks shallow, but is actually not.

wow that place looks gorgeous, and apparently the yucatan molly is very similar to the sail fin molly. Either way, with color like that I want one. I would also love a beastly JD in my brackish tank but he would certainly be too aggressive.

I will be going to cancun this fall and I hope there are some nearby cenotes I can snorkel.

The blue dots on the map above are all cenotes.
They are all along the main highway south of Cancun, Eden and Cristalino are both full of JDs, catfish and mollies, and both very close to the highway @ 35 miles south of Cancun.
Below is a shot of Eden cenote

Easily found, they have easy access from the highway.

image.jpgHere are a couple of my brackish dwellers. The silver scat you see here in profile is 10" from tip to tail. I have two silver scats, two red scats, two green scats, two shark cats and a Datinoid in my tank. Brackish is easy - my planted tanks and my reef are definitely harder to maintain.
