How can I go about breeding feeder goldfish? For some reason I was under the impression that they didn't breed well in tanks, but someone I was talking to the other day said hers laid eggs in fall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

goldfish are a poor choice if you want to breed feeders. they need a large pond to breed in, need to be a few years old and the fry grow slow you would be better breeding cons or guppy what are you feeding ?

also, they have little nutritional value

I'm just feeding my curiosity. I have a 10g tank here with a few goldfish in it that were spared by my oscar. The kids felt sorry for the goldfish and said that since the oscar choose not to eat them that they should have their own tank. That was about a year ago and the goldfish have now become part of the family. Quite honestly I never saw myself as someone that would have a tank of goldfish, but the little beggars won me over too. I've successfully breed many fish in the past, but never even tried with goldfish so I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't really breeding them to be feeders, they are fish that were sold to me as feeders.

if they are normal goldfish and not those genetic freaks then you will need a tank a bit bigger say 40 gallons good filtration .

goldfish are weird, and i've only heard of people spawning them in ponds. i suppose you could try but need a bigger tank, still i'd say not to use them as feeders unless you have to, i guess it'd be fun for the kids lol, while they're still fascinated but such simple fish lol. take advantage of their amusement by cheap fish for now, at least that's all they're asking for

yes, they are normal goldfish, no bulging eyes or strange shaped bodies. They are in great health, getting bigger, 3"-4" and fat

Regular comets eh? Figure 30+ gallons of water each. They do max out at 14+ inches

I am curious as to why they are commmonly sold as feeders when they are in fact not that easy to breed. I would think that guppies or some other live bearer is more likely to be a feeder. I see at my lfs that they do have live bearers as feeder but they are more expensive. I have to admit it seems strange.
