Budget questions for 300 to 500 gallon aquarium.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It looks like I pay around .15 per kwh.....I guess. I never paid much attention except to make sure there wasn't any drastic change in the amount, and to make sure that I paid the correct total.

At $0.15 per KWHr, I would guess you should expect a bump in your electric bill of between $55 to $100 per month, depending on what the air temps are of the room the tank will be in and whether or not you will need to run a dehumidifier.

Pump = 144KWHRs
Heaters = 180KWHRs
Lights = 36KWHRs
Dehumidifier (if needed) = 216KWHRs

These are obviously ballpark figures, but I'd bet they are pretty accurate.

Thank you for the figures. That is a huge help! :clap I will put a lot of thought into this and see what I can work out and hopefully this economy will turn around by the time that I am ready. Again, thank you.

I was interested in the pacus because of the personality as they seem to really be interested in their keeper and there is one nearby that is in great need of a home. I love ALL fish, actually, so I feel certain that I can live through it if I cannot afford to keep it. Your thoughts?

I got a 600 gal with a drip system 3 pumps and heater electric went up about 80 extra a month I also have a 30 watt uv as well as the air bubbler so I would be on the high end of electric but my bill is always fluctuate but a simple answer to your question is your electric bill will not break you with a 500 gal considering you have tge money to invest in a monster tank you should have an extra 50-80$ every month for the bill

I run a 750g with 4 heaters 2 pumps and a UV and then. 180 with a couple heaters and one pump. These tanks add an extra 100$ a month to my bill

My old 220 had a crappy undersized sump, a mag18 return pump, 2 canister filters, T8 lighting, and crappy plexi lids. My new 225 has a standard 75g sump, 2 Laguna pumps, led lighting, and nice glass lids and a canopy. My power bill went down $35~ a month and I have over twice the flow. Making a setup more energy efficient keeps the wife very happy. Next up is a tankless water heater and a drip setup....

Well, I am not prosperous by any means but this gives me hope! Thanks.

So, I need to choose my stuff wisely. Hmmmm. I will need to do my homework, carefully. I went to a seminar on building ponds and the man there said that pumps vary widely on how much electricity they use and he talked about a cheap pump that used $200 worth of electricity a month. I think that I need a better job to fuel this addiction, lol. Guess I had better dust off that resume!
