I would suggest drain tiles at the bottom of your excavation ,out side the pond to drain water from the hill ( with a sump pump or drains to a lower area). Unless you have checked some civil engineering table for the stability of the soil in the hill, and are at a safe angle so a mudslide is not possible.
How thick will your ice get? I was suprised in Chicago area when my 4 ft deep above ground pool froze solid; a very impressive 32 ft long ice cube.
Pretty fantastic project for an individual.

Yes i don't have a pic of it going in but if you see the pic of the hill taken back more and the ditch dug, that ditch is a weeper bed(the perforated pipe covered in gravel) thats going to be hooked up to the city sewer when the garage is done and before the driveway gets poard and there is going to be another drainage pipe that is also going to go out to the street, the pond's overflow is going to be hocked up to this second pipe.

I had inspectors and structural engineers over about 5-6 times now and according to them the hill is safe at up to a 75*angle(mine is about 60*, it was 35 to begin with) since its entirely rock, slate and hard packed clay(in that order) apparently there is no chance of a mud slide(the water dosent even soak in it used to run down and puddle up against the house), to my surprise none of the changes that i have made needed a permit, well the pond did, any hole over 3' deep in my town dose, and since my pond at its deepest(a 2mx1m area) is going to be about 50"-54" deep below the waterline it needed one but the city was more than happy to give me one once i showed the comity pic of the site the plans and pic of the rest of the land, now the big hurdle is getting the adjustment comity to approve the garage since it's technically too close to the train tracks on the other side of the engineered hill., i plan on getting one or two floating heaters for the pond over winter(next winter) to keep it open but it sometimes gets Below 40*C Here we basically get the same cold and snowfall as Buffalo and Pennsylvania. if that gives you a idea, although it it below ground with cover all around i don't think that the ice is going to get over 1' in the deepest area. but I'll se anyway, i only plan on getting 5 koi the first year so if it dose at least it wont be a huge loss, although any loss is big.

and to all, thank you. relay, its a pretty fun project i only wish i got more time off of work to do it.

The funny part about this one is my brother and i planned a week off of work to get as much done as posable, this was about 2 months ahead of time. then i ended up getting fired(my boss didn't like being told that he is a stunned c*nt and that he couldn't manage his way out of a wet paper bag...) and when i started my new job this project was going to start the next week, so in the interview i told them that i need to take the week off so i can either start after that or now and take the week off any way.

so i worked a week and took the next one off...lol. and i ended getting paid 3 weeks for working 1, I love salary.

as for having time to think it over you are right, i still don't know how I'm going to finish the waterfall(after the contractor screwed it up), originally i was going to use cultured rock then i learned that the water will ware it too quickly.

and the filter part original i was going to use a large garbage can and fill the bottom up with foam the bio-balls and then some fine filter floss, and the second pump giving the waterfall more flow, now I'm going to line the whole thing with cinder block pore a bottom with some reinforced concrete and line it with liner and make the whole thing a filter powered by both pumps.

thats what im trying to avoid, I dont want all the water to drain and flod my new shed, and on the lower levle there are three diffrent neaboughs, and i dont want to flood them, when all is said and dont the war they we planned this there will be no draining water thats going to end up there...

and im serprised that thet pool didnt burst with the ice expanding so much, i would live to see that., there is a plant nurery right near me that runs the waterfall 24/7 and there pond never frezes over. i dont see me running the huge pumps i have when i dont have to...
