Costs so far...

2x4 10' = $57.00
2x4 8' = $15.00
2x6 8' = $7.00
2x6 10' = $59.50
2x6 12' = $20.00
2x8 12' = $14.00
2x8 10' = $105.00
2x8 8' = 9.00
Treated 4x4 = $13.00
3/4" Plywood sheets 4'x8' = $120.00
5/16" Concrete sheets 4'x4' = $132.00
Construction adhesive = $10.00
Screws = $32.00
Muraitic acid = $5.00
Seam tape = $8.00
Glass = $1750.00
Pond armor (2 gallons) = $700.00 (with shipping)
Lights = $100.00
Bulbs = $28.00
Plumbing = $100.00
Bulkheads = $80.00

Total = $3654.00

Very nice. now is this the total? or do we still need to add filteration and heaters?

but thank you very much for the VERY detailed price list. One of these once the tank is running would be sweet. so we know exactly how much. since I will be doing something along the lines of this within 3 years (I'm holding out to buy a new house first)

I already have a sump, 2 pumps, 2 heaters, airpump, and a few thousand scrubbies..

The only additonal cost will be in the form of 5-7 hundred pounds of sand that I still have to purchase.

Hmmm then why am I selling 500 pounds of sand.. Might have to rethink that one..

I never knew Pond Armor cost that much. What about it is so damn expensive?

Everything else about that list seems reasonable to me and makes me very optimistic about making my own monster sooner rather than later, especially if I use regular glass... but man, that's a lot of money just to seal it.

It's called value based pricing, where companies charge what people will pay, instead of how much it costs to make the crap. Pond armor is just colored epoxy. you're paying for the tech support and guarantee and whatnot. It looks kickass when it's done, but for my plywood tank purposes, a 5 gallon pail of polyester resin is $120 or so, and a gallon of high quality gelcoat is around $50. Both can be sprayed on for similar results, if you're willing to put up with the stench.

OK.. I got home today to find there was no new pond armor waiting for me at the door... :(

Called and am waiting on a tracking number. But, it didn't sound good.

As for cost of pond armor.. Yeah it's up there but if you read I had a problem getting the advertised coverage which is why it's 2x what it should have been.

Fiberglass is a huge pain in the ass and cost just as much when it's all said and done.
Sweetwater Epoxy would have been my second choice but it too was as expensive.

Also the last two options require massive ventilation and other precautions due to it's hazardous chemicals and odor. That alone is why I choose pond armor. No need to worry about killing my wife, cats, and the other fish in the house.

It's not just colored epoxy. It's potable and non-toxic. Most epoxy is neither.

It IS just colored epoxy. It's not any old epoxy, but it's not super duper special, either.

Industrial Formulators Cold Cure, or west systems marine epoxy are both fish safe, but they don't recommend you use them for potable water tanks, because the liability concerns outweigh any extra sales they might get by serving that market.

As for fiberglass, yeah it can be a pain in the ass. I have a lot of experience with it though, so I don't see that bump in the road. costwise, how do you figure it's just as costly? for $300 you could get enough resin and Chopped Strand mat to completely line your tank with it (which is way overkill.)

Anyways, let's not derail the thread over this, Pond armor is a perfectly viable choice for lining a tank or a pond, I would just as soon use something less expensive, even if it's more of a PITA.
