Welcome to MFK

As you know the Alligator G will grow to at least 6 to 8 feet. You can figure out that you will need at least a tank as large as you would need for an arapaima g.

John Ptc has built a 10,000 gallon tank for his pima. So this might be a guidline as the smallest tank you will need for 1 alligator gar as an adult.

I have one AG but he is still small (3 foot range) and is in a 580 right now. Next will be the 800 and then the 15K on his way to the 52K

I realize many people might suggest a smaller tank as being suitable.

Another idea is to put the AG outside each summer in a pond.

good luck.

what the dimension of that tank?

The outside dimensions of the tank are nearly 40 feet long & nearly 30 feet wide.

The inside I think would be closer to 36feet plus long by about 27 feet wide.

The water in it is 9 feet deep.

I was wondering what kind of nitrate levels either of your mega tanks have and whether it'll be cost-effective putting something like johnptc's nitrate filter onto your tanks. After initial setup costs, it seems all that filter needs are more of that micro c g to feed the bacteria and a pump or two for circulation and water return to the tank. With today's oil prices, heating all that replacement water must put a dent in the pocket. Still lovin' your Wallago :)

I don't monitor the nitrate. I do a lot of water change per week in all my tanks. A friend of mine did monitor the water several times a few years ago and said it was always low.

John PTC is a super hobbyist and his systems are fantastic.

My fish thrive also but more with low tech approach.

I have many fish that are doing well and more than 15 years in my care. The oldest is 28 years old (not a monster only a 3" clown pleco). Among mini monsters I have a piranha that is 25 years with me. Changing to a different system in my case might not be good for these older fish. Also my water is not the same as what many of you have since we live in different areas.

With the 100 plus tanks and more than 80,000 gallons of water I am inclined to keep the methods I've had success with.

Thanks for your idea. If I have problems in the future I will consider implementing John's system.

I really like the 2 Wallego also. They have that I am bigger than you attitude.

When they zero in for a mackeral or whatever at feeding time.

Everybody else takes off and fast.

Your tanks are a testament to what a great fishkeeper you are. If the nitrate levels remain low, no sense in messing with your system now I guess. It would be fascinating to see how that nitrate filter would do in either of your tanks though.

Wow amazing tank, tried to look thru the whole thread but its huge, where can i see pics of the tank fully set up, or recent photos????

I'm gonna have one like that, just as soon as i win the loto maybe next week lol:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL: once again killer tank

Check out that link in his signature. It brings you to some awesome vids. Li should've dubbed them with some pumped up rock music though heh.

Now that is the meaning of a monster fish tank!!!
