I think you need some big barbs in there :D Although balas would be too small.
Here is a pic of a 26" Leptobarbus rubripinna (formerly hoeveni) behind the Atractosteus spatula. The barb is around 26" total length and I've had it 15 years. They are both in the big tank (196k litres)

I do keep a small shoal of Balantiocheilos melanopterus in a 3066 litre tank.

Nice fish 15 year's is quite a while, seems as though the gar has had his fair share of fights/attacks, looking at his left pectoral fin.

The gar has had a tough time when first introduced to the big tank as the Wallago tried to eat it twice and hence the damage to fins and body which have now healed. The gar is 11 years old.

The Bala sharks do the spawning motion but I have not seen eggs released. Have you bred them?

Also please post the pictures of those large barbs your friend caught and see if anyone here has seen them before....thanks
