how do the cichlids survive? theyre so small.

what kind of filtration system do you use for that huge thing?

The small fish survive and reproduce because:

they are very smart
they use the 28,000 lbs of lava rock to hide in
the big fish eat some but lose interest in chasing them all the time and catching so few.

The wallegos appear to be the most succesful because they ambush capture (They lie still like a rock and just open their mouth when the prey is in range.) They do will hunt when the lights are off and pick off pish that are in the 12" to 24" range at this time. (Lights are off only during a power failure occuring at night.)

I use a 600 lb sand filter. But after so many years it no longer can handle the bio load so I am upgrading the filtration:headbang2 in the next 2 months.

Yes I have a young Boulengerochromis microlepis (20") but I keep it in a 800 gallon tank with stingrays 20 -24", 2 Panagasius sanitswongi (12"), 2 Atractosteus tristoechus (20") and a megalops cyprinoides (13-14").

I put a similiar size Boulengerochromis microlepis (20") into my 15K a few years ago and it was eaten. Possibly by a big male stingray.

I find that many cichlids can co habit with Arapaima Gigas if given areas to hide (ie driftwood and rocks). They will swim in open water when they know there are safe areas to hide if attacked.

Too bad you couldn't make the ACA convention in Chicago the African cichlid experts were there. Because I don't feel qualified to help you in selection. The African cichlids I have in the 52K are listed in this article.
