Bulkhead trouble

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yellow looks like CPVC cement so may be wrong type there. when i did plumbing professionally yellow was always for CPVC

Thanks for all the replies, I may be over tightening. I am doing hand tight then a quarter turn with the giant hand pliers. The yellow Stuff is called pipe lubricant made for potable water, it makes the threads easy to tighten, I can almost bottom out the threads by just hand turning, as opposed to when not using that I can not turn them. Yea if I switch to the heavier bulkheads I will have to drill the sump and overflow holes larger, I want to avoid that if I can.

do not use the PTFE plumbers paste on those bulkheads. thats the reason youre overtightening them. use tape instead , if you need it, it wont let you sink the lock threads past where they belong.+ when i did plumbing we used the pipe dope on black iron and on threaded brass. never pvc

yeah i would not use that in plastic joints. it really is slippery stuff. the teflon tape people commonly use is an easier method to not overtighten. it will bind and fill voids in the threads vs the paste being a lubricant that can be moved

off topic a little - where did you get the sump?

Sump and tank were custom made by Midwest custom acrylics, builder would have done the sump differently but I had it built to my drawings. I wanted a shorter/ wider sump as opposed to a taller one. I am going to try and run a double bean animal setup and see if that works for me, I needed the extra room on top of the sump to fit the gate valve vertically.

Thread time thread from aquacave 1/2 inch and
1 1/2 inch no jssues good lrices as well. They donsell heavy duty version but have never had a need no issues with one from them

Even though the can says for plastic and metal pipes on it. On the back in extremely small print it says " For pipe made of galvanized steel, iron, brass, copper, aluminum, stainless steel, polyethylene, reinforced fiberglass, and PVC. DO NOT USE ON ABS OR CPVC."

The bulkheads were ABS, so this product should not have been used on ABS bulkheads. I have removed all threaded bulkheads from my project and I am going to use only slip bulkheads that have glued fittings. I am using Oatley all purpose PVC cement for the PVC ABS bulkhead connections.

I believe the bulkheads snapped due to either the inappropriate pipe thread sealant or overtightening or a combination of both.

Thanks for everyone's input.
