I'm probably in the minority here, although the tank is definitely on the smaller size I think you can pull it off. I'd go big on the filter. As big as possible, I'm not familiar with the filter you mentioned. I'd feed good floating pellets straight up. And no, I wouldn't make it a planted tank, my jack always destroyed any arrangement I set up.

Im getting a very good filter for the tank. Maybe 35% water change a week will keep nitrates down

Why not see if you can source some rocia octal.
They look just like regular jds but are a lot more peaceful and a little smaller.They are fairly new to the hobby but do pop up from time to time.
