ok, so i cant be the only one who has trouble pronouncing scientific names of all our wonderful species of CA/SA cichlids...

so what im gunna ask you all to do is chip in and write down some names of CA/SA cichlids and then write how you would pronouce it. some people may not understand from my description so ill do an example. (please correct me if this is wrong but this is what ive been told before)

so..

Parachromis dovii - Parachromis Dovei

thanks

Howard

Parachrmois Loiselli

Para-Chrome-Miss..... Loy-Sell-E.

very good thread if it can be kept on track. :thumbsup:

aequidens rivulatus - aqui-dens riv-you-laht-is

herichthys - her-ick-this

what about caquetaia?

Excellent thread! I have the hardest time trying to pronounce some of these and when i say the name to others they look at me like Im on crack... LOL

Vieja Synspilum - Vee-ja Sin-spy-lum

These threads are great, but the pronunciation and spelling needs to be correct when offered! : )

Basically, you are to use a latinized pronunciation whether the root is latin or greek. For instance, Herichthys would be: her-ICK-theez. Exceptions would be when the root is a proper name or a local/native term that has been converted to a latin form. For instance Loisellei (named for Paul Loiselle) would be: loy-ZELL-ee-eye.......or if you choose to pronounce it Euro style to mirror the manner in which that proper name is pronounced by some: wah-ZELL-ee-eye. Vieja is: vee-YAH-ha (Spanish).....and on and on.......

There is a nice thread on Mo's site that covers most of this.

Ichthyology = Ick-Thee-Ah-Low-Gee

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the species is named after a person and the person it's being named after is a male, the species name ends in "i". If it is a woman the fish is being named after, it ends in "ae".

Examples:
Theraps wesseli - After Rusty Wessel
Pseudotropheus socolofi - After Ross Socolof
Labeotropheus trewavasae - After Dr Ethelwynn Trewavas

Some additional latin scientific naming vernacular...
sp. = species
cf. = compare to
aff. = affinis which means related to.

cf. and aff. are usually interchangeable I believe as they mean basically the same thing.

Example: Aequidens sp. cf. rivulatus "silver saum" which means it's an Aequidens species (although not permanently described) and is closely compared to rivulatus (although a slightly different fish) and "silver saum" represents the type/ color variation.

Aequidens sp. aff. rivulatus "silver saum" would also be correct in this case.

Feel free to post any additional names and how to pronounce them and we'll add them to the list.

Unfortunately, a lot of the ones on the list are incorrectly done. Mostly, because of incorrect syllable breaking.
i.e.

haitiensis is not Haiti-In-Sis it would be hay-SHE-en-zis
Cryptoheros is not Crypt-Oh-He-Rose it would be Cryp-TOE-heh-rows
