can a blue crab live in a reef tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I read up on them, and they are omnivorous and they aren't incredibly picky about what they eat. It seems like they would be good at eating the left overs in your tank, but also sounds like they would eat any fish they might catch and possibly eat soft corals and lps.

Not unless you seal that tank up tighter than a zip lock bag full of angry bees.

They can and will get out. I am not aware of any way to keep them in and still allow for gas exchange in the tank.

And yes, they will eat any and all fish in your tank, no exceptions.

im not worried bout the fish its a pred reef. with groupers, lionsfish,hi hat drums, and a 6 inch maroon clown. for the most part i really want them to feed my fish.
becauze i get so many i was gunna put them in my tank and let them stay there until they eating.
thnks for the input guys much appreciated nd sorry about my spelling

Blue leg hermits? Or blue crabs like the ones we eat? Be careful with bluecrabs, stonecrabs ect...I know that in FL there are pretty specific rules about when you can and cant pull them. I interned for the DEP out of Ft Myers

He was refering to the actual crabs that people enjoy consuming.

I hate eating fish, crabs, etc....yucky :irked:

i have a natural saltwater pond behind my house nd its loaded with bluecrabs
that is were i netted them from i usually use them for fishing but was curious

How big is the tank?
Blue crabs are one of the more aggressive swimming crabs, and thats saying something.
Hen it gets big (dont forget they reach 9" carapace width), anything in your tank that comes near it will be damaged, and that clown will be eaten.

listen the crabs will be in te tank for maybe a week they will be consumed by my fish but in the week timespan will a 1-3inch blue crab destroy my reef?

Your reef is a pred reef...I doubt that if you put small ones in there that they will ever get big enough to do any real damage.

That being said I have already mentioned the fact that FL has regs on the collection of blue crab. I dont know how old you are, but you might want to check the regs to make sure that you are in the clear to collect them.
