Hi, I have bought this piece of furniture from IKEA for my fish tank 123Liters. the product desc says, it is made from particle board.

I heard from other neighbors that they have been using IKEA's furniture made from Particleboard for fish tank and they had no problem. I have a question, what are the signs that I should look to know in advance the the furniture will not give up and cause a water flood?1.jpg

Although some aquarium stands are made of particle board they are built by engineers who work for aquarium manufacturers. Furniture and aquarium stands are built differently for their purpose. Some people get lucky but personally don't recommend using anything other than something built for aquariums. The only negative for partical board aquarium stands is as everyone has stated is when the particle board gets wet it will make the stand weaken.

Thanks. If I try to avoid making it wet by all means. will it be still okay to use it? Is there any sign that I look for to know that the stand is starting to giving up?

If you want to minimize the chance of it getting wet, if it’s not too late, I’d put some sort of plastic mat under it and have it hang over the edge a bit.

I personally wished I worked at Ikea I would have told you no but the salesperson was probably honest and said she didn't know. We are here to help you and don't want anything to happen to you or your aquarium. I'm personally about safety at work or home.

It's great that you're being cautious about the furniture's ability to support your fish tank. While this thread is from a couple of years ago, the importance of ensuring the safety of your setup remains the same. Particleboard can be suitable for such purposes, but it's crucial to consider the weight capacity and the condition of the furniture. Since you mentioned that neighbors have used IKEA's particleboard furniture for fish tanks successfully, that's a positive sign. As an additional suggestion, if you're concerned about the particleboard's strength, you can explore creative ways to reinforce it. Learning how to decoupage, for instance, can help you strengthen and personalize your furniture.

Thank you TobyDerk!
I did not risk with ikea furniture, so I bought a very strong oak wood table for it.
thank you again for writing
