i purchased a 55 long aqueon tank from petsmart a while back... wanted to drill it, is anybody aware if aqueon tanks are made with tempered glass? can i drill my aqueon 55, thanks??
Can I drill holes in my aquarium for external filters?
Maybe, many of our aquariums are made with tempered glass in the bottom. Tempered glass cannot be drilled. Non-tempered glass panels may be drilled by a qualified technician. In some cases, you may special order All-Glass aquariums pre-drilled with the MegaFlow or Twin-Flow overflow systems. You could also special order, in some cases, an aquarium with non-tempered glass if you wanted to have it drilled outside of our facility. If you have an older tank that you want to drill, don’t take any chances - if you are not sure that the glass is non-tempered, do not drill it.
Drilling Aqueon Tanks
Just a heads up for folks considering drilling an Aqueon tank. I called and verified the following with two different product specialists at the company. Some of their tanks ARE being made with tempered side glass now. Call first and using the serial number off a new tank you can make sure it is not tempered before trying to drill it. They are making some tanks sold as "kits" that have a bunch of stuff packaged inside them with tempered glass on the sides so they are better able to handle rougher handling / shipping with the stuff packaged inside them. If you pick one up used as I did you are taking on some risk about its origins and it is tough to tell if drilling will be successful.
I have tried testing tanks using the glass cutters to see if they are tempered. In my experience, it does not really help as I have a 15 gallon and 29 gallon that were both drilled successfully and they didn't scratch easily just like the 55 gallon which I had explode. The cutter reacted on all 3 (didn't scratch easily) as if they were tempered. Just passing along some information to consider before buying and drilling.
