I guess you are not fasting him long enough. I've probably never heard of insurmountable problems or even big problems of getting an RTC to take pellets. Weeks of a fast are literally nothing, starting out with a healthy fish in a good form. Almost any RTC should break down in 1-2 weeks for sure.
