Hey y'all! I'm trying to downsize the stocking of my discus tank because it is overstocked, and I was wondering if I could put neon tetras in a 10-gallon tank. If so, how many can I put? I have 11 right now; would that be too much?

Thank you!

When it comes to these questions, i.e. "How many XXX fish can I jam into this X-gallon tank?"...the answer is always the same: It depends upon how much work you are willing to do, in terms of changing water and otherwise maintaining the tank.

A dozen or so Neons could live in a 10-gallon tank if sufficient attention is paid to keeping the water clean and the nitrate level under control. Problems like overfeeding, temperature control, etc. are magnified by the small volume of water. Water parameters can go from perfect to complete crap in a very short time.

Having said that...I don't personally think that anything other than small invertebrates should be kept permanently in such a tiny container. Others will disagree.
