Can Petco refuse to sell fish?

I am thoroughly confused. You made a thread a few days ago and stated that you just got the tank and set it up 4 days ago and it was currently cycling.

Yesterday you said the tank has been up for a month and fully cycled.

It cant be both, and from what you've written, I believe your tank is not cycled and the employee did the right thing.

As an LFS worker, I know it's hard to draw the line when no to sell someone a fish. The problem is what's "wrong" or a "bad idea" is subjective and up to the employee. Where do you draw the line?

-Brackish fish like monos or scats for freshwater tanks?
-SA cichlids with Africans?
-Fish that grow huge when people don't have big enough tanks?

I might not think certain fish are okay for cycling but another employee does...so does the customer have to go around asking different or less knowledgable employees until they find someone who will sell it to them? Usually I make my opinion clear, void the guarantee and wait to say "I told you so" when they come back.

Well said.

With all due respect the employee did the right thing, and I would have done the same. If you tanks not ready for the fish, don't add it. On top of that a 20 gallon is not suitable for an Angel, so again he was right to not sell you the fish. I should goto Petco and ask to buy a couple Oscars for my fish bowl and then start a thread about how they did the right thing and I am pissed.
