can someone tell me the difference between a Rotkiel and a red shouldered severum ple

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
even just a varient of the species H. severus

Arent Rotkeils substrate spawners, and severus mouthbrooders?
I wouldnt think they would class them as the same species, with different breeding methods.

I am sorry for my mistake.

Not sure and you could be right, but I'm not a zoologists and don't know exactly what it takes to define a species and subspecies so I'm not going to speculate on what its classification will be if/when it is described.

Common names are a waste of time, and just lead to confusion, use the latin.
 Honestly people, it isn't really that hard....

There is a lot of confusion with the Heros complex especially amoung hobbyist. The "severum" of the hobby is who knows what, A substrait spawner of unknown origin, in the early days it was thought there was one species and people freely bred whatever was imported to each other irregardless if it was from Peru, Brazil or Colombia, so the domestic "severum" may (most likely) be a mix of many species. We now know H severus is a mouth brooder, there are at least 5-6 more described species (substrait spawners) and probable 2-3 more undiscribed species. Unfortunantly most are sold as some sort of "Severum" and people call them this, I correct every post I see on all the forums I visit so the continued hybridization hopefully won't occur. I regularly see people posting pics of crossing of the diffrent species and calling all of them severum. Ken

What are the other species? I thought there were only four recognised species, H. efasciatus, notatus, severus, and spurius.

I feel your pain about the hybridisation, Rotkeils are pretty hard to come by here in NZ, and I sold my one last year to a breeder (who has a bit of a reputation for selling african cichlids with dodgy/incorrect names) in the hopes that he would be able to find a male and breed them, as I didn't have the space to keep, and now he's crossed it with a gold male and is now claiming the gold gene is recessive and the fry should look like rotkeil. Here's a link to his auction on the NZ equivilant of ebay: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Fish/auction-207824947.htm

Can we try to be a little more rude to a brand new member? I don't think we're trying hard enough.

All she wanted to know is the difference between rotkiel and red shouldered severum. Maybe someone should start a Heros/Severus discussion thread. Now there's an idea.

Who's being rude? The question was answered on the first page and there was a bit of debate around the name which has been carried on. Yes it got away from the initial question, but not before it had been answered and its hardly off-topic. Whats rude about that?
