Can you keep green spotted or figure 8 puffers in freshwater for life?

Aquarium co-op has some really good videos on the subject on you tube. I believe he said pea puffers are the only fresh water puffers.

No, they won't live long. If you want an active puffer that grows to a similar size and all freshwater, I would suggest amazon puffers.

I really like the color on green spotted puffers by any chNce is there a puffer that looks similar

C.Asellus aka the south american puffer looks the closest... just dont pick up a Ceylon puffer by accident as they look very similar but require high end brackish to marine conditions...

My lfs can get colomsesus asellus in for 5$ is that a good deal and would they get along with discus

While they are a friendly puffer so to speak, i would not risk putting them with something fragile like discus... Best really kept as a species only tank with small, very fast moving fish such as rummy nose tetras...

Gsp is marine basically. Now an F8 is fw if I remember correctly but the fresh they come from has parameters that's easiest to replicate with light brackish.
