True, but I'd still recommend putting a coating on the wood, like polyurethane.

1/4" tempered glass will hold as many cats as you can stack.

I think a test is in order.......I will get som tempered glass, you get the cats.....

Plexiglas would be secure and easy to modify for filters etc and not reduce light to aquarium. slightly larger than outside dimensions as you will want to install small stop blocks to underside to prevent slippage . i like the door handle idea in another post.
