Red alert, red alert!! I just noticed that my 2 Cauqetaia spectabilis have free swimming fry. Oh yes, I am so happy. I'll post most of the info in the sticky, but I wanted to just let you all know in case you don't look up there.

Here are a few thread exclusive pics:

Sweet!!! They are such beautiful fish. Congradulations ... I wish I had a tank large enough for them.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I'll try to post some more pics later in the Caquetaia sticky. The parents stay hidden a lot, they pretty much only come out to eat or chase other fish away. The parents and fry are very well hidden away, it's hard to get good shots. I'll see if I can find a oic of the layout. There is a Xingu 1 in there, he will devoure the fry in a heartbeat. I would like to move him into another aquarium, but he'll be difficult to catch, and I don't want to freak out the parents while doing so. My best bet is to try to siphon some out while they are still small enough to siphon. I can't tell how many fry there are, they are in deep cover.

Here are some fast facts about conditions and stuff;
-It is a 90 gallon aquarium, 48 inches long

-tankmates are a polleni, buttikoferi, and a xingu 1, all the fish are close in size, around 6 inches give or take a little

- ph is 6.2, I use Mardel tank soft to get it there from what is normally about 7.2 in my aquariums

- temp is 90 f

- filtration is 2 AC 110s, also a powerhead provides air bubbles

- at least weekly 30% water changes

- feed frozen and freeze dried krill, Hikari Bio Gold Pellets, Omega 1 flakes and Pellets, Formula One flakes, HBH Super Soft krill pellets, Hikari Cichlid Excel once a week, last live food was earthworms about 6 weeks ago

SMS, how are your Kraussis doing, are they still breeding?

Here is a pic of the tank. The spectabiles dug out their nest under some large pieces of driftwood, creating a cave. There are piles of gravel everywhere in the aquarium. Hidden from view, ther is a flowerpot on it's side on the right hand side of the cave. You can see one of the specs looking out, notice her glowing eyes, that's the entrance to the cave.

OK SMS, I will add 4 more pics exclusive to this thread because you asked for breeding dress photos. They really don't look much different than they normally do, but they have been hanging out together most of 2008, ready to breed.

First pic is the mommy guarding the entrance to the cave.

You can see where they dug out around the slate base of the driftwood. It used to be buried deep.

The female after she chased the Xingu and Buttikoferi to the left side of the aquarium and continued threatening them.

The butti and pike have their mouths full of kriil, in case you're wondering why they look funny.
