Carp fishing in the US

I've seen them "mudding", they roll around in the mud and I've heard them making noises while they do it. It's quite a site. My friend and I try to catch them with nets when they do this. But I've also seen them jumping out of the water. It's completley different.

I have also seen carp clear the water for no apparent reason, and have wondered what they are doing. It usually occurs in the reeds in 3 feet of water at the lake I frequent.

Being an avid carp angler:naughty: I see it all the time. When we night fish you can be sitting there in the pitch black and then bang you hear something the size of a dog crash out in front off you.
There are a lot of theories behind this. One is jumping could dislodge gill parasites or body parasites. It could also could be high dissolved oxygen conditions (and several eminent fisheries experts) believe it could be down to sheer exuberance! :D
 
I live near a lake where the carp get to 4 feet long. My sister caught a 36 inch common carp on a garden worm and I have seen monsters twice as big as that one just sitting in the sun.
 
i read that marshmallows work on carp and i want to try this as it would just amuse me if it works. i presume they mean to use those small marshmallows that you can put in hot chocolate, not the huge campfire goodness ones.

also- what are your opinions on treble hooks? and should i still use a hair rig for floating?

Treble hooks are a big no no in the UK as can do some serious damage to the fish.

As for surface baits Get some Pedigree chum mixers (these are a bog biscuit we get in the UK), then rinse them under a tap in a sieve for a min' or two, then put them in a sealable bag with plenty of air in them (and a squirt of flavour pineapple food essence is good) and leave over night. This will let them absorb the water and expand 100% and soften. Then just put then on the hook 2 on a size 4 works well. Then throw a handful out to get them on the go.

I have used dog biscuits, cat biscuits, floating bread crust, pop-up boilies

Or how about making a simple floater cake.

as for hair rigging if I use a boilies or even a cork ball soaked in flavour I would put it on the hair if I am using bred mellows etc right on the hook.
