Centipede safe for feeding?

Hi,

I just captured a centipede inside my house, probably came from the garden. It's very much alive and looks healthy. I have a mixed community tank with an arowana, bichirs and zigzag eels. Should I toss the centipede in as a rare treat? Is it safe?

I myself would not. Depending on the species many centipedes have pretty potent venom and painful bites. I suppose you could kill the pede before you offer him as food though.

Oh.. I tossed in the centipede anyway. It crawled around a bit before drowning and curling up. My fish didn't touch the thing, though. I guess they like shrimp and anchovy better!

I won't throw a WC centipede into my tank and look as the fish which ate it turns belly up

Centipedes are not poisonous, they are venomous AFAIK. As long as they do not deliver their venom into bloodstream, they cannot kill a fish. I highly doubt they could sting a fish underwater.

Then again, none of my fish showed any interest.

Man I am glad that I live in the USA. I guess the centipedes that we have in America are all the non-poisonous/ venomous variety.

I have my fishtanks all set up in the basment clubroom, and crawling critters are the absolute norm. I throw ALL crawling critters (with the exception of spiders, long story) right into any of the cichlid tanks and have not had adverse effects on the fish to date!

Oscars, Nile Tilapia and my Golden Severum all seem to love centipede.

PS: I have brewed beer for over two decades, and am a trappist monk ale junky! The Belgian Monks would never kill a spider in the monestary/ brewery! They were believed to be sent from GOD to protect the precious wort (Unfermented Malt - beer to be) from evil critters like flies etc...

Since they have like a thousand years of brewing experience, who am I to "F" with something that works and passed the test of time.

i have often wondered this too- i dont think there is any posinious ones in colorado.

Could you please take it out and see if it lives and release it? No sense in making the thing suffer for no reason.
