Sunny Side up
Hi Dear Channa Lovers,

I got my first Channa today (Channa Pulchra) at 4" for $15.

Questions :

1. Maximum Potential Size
2. Temperament
3. Anything special I should note about

The fish is currently housed in a 2' x 1.5' tank with a 7" Vulture Cat, 11" SAL and 2 4"-5" Cichla Sp.

Thanks so much for the help :)

You have gone way wrong already!

Channa Pulchra as with most Snakeheads are not community fish.
Add to that the fact that the Pulchra alone is not suitable for a 2ft x 1.5ft tank, let alone with a Lungfish, and the other stocking you have.

Then most importantly, the Channa is a SUB TROPICAL fish. Needs cooler water, and should not be kept in tropical conditions. (mine were kept at 19c)

To answer your questions:

1. 12" ish.
2. Very aggressive more so as it grows.
3. See all the above information in my post.

Oh oh :(

Then what should I do :(

Hello pal
1, his size will be 9 to 12 inch, mine is about 10.
It depends on food, tank size and water.
2, his temperament depends on the fish himself,
Ive found them to be fine with other fish as have others,
But it is recommended that they be kept in species tank.
If you want to mix him, do it young and nothing that will fit in his mouth
Even when he grows.
Your tank really is too small for when he is adult,
I take it you have plans to upgrade in the next 12 months.
Give him plenty of hides and plant cover they are nervous when small.
If you do get a bigger tank and decide to mix them, be careful not to put any large bully fish in with him
As dont think because he's a sh.he can't be bullied.
All the best mate.

Only just joined this forum and I noticed your post. I happen to have 2 channa pulchra myself, they're a lovely fish, you'll enjoy them. I wouldn't worry too much about mixing them. I've had mine mixed with tropical fish and had no problems in 4 years, my temp is 24C.

They're currently in with an Oscar and a Bichir, the pulchra occupy the bottom 3rd and the Oscar stays up in the top 3rd, the Bichir cleans up at the bottom of the tank. When I first started I had a couple of escapees but that's about as dramatic as it's got for me. You'll hear alot saying not to mix them but at the end of the day they're your fish.

Take care ;)

Yes, they are your fish at the end of the day.

But you can keep them in the wrong conditions (with non Channa pulchra, and in tropical water) or you can make an effort to keep them as close to natural habitat as possible!

They are NOT tropical fish and keeping them in tropical water can very likely lead to stress induced problems such as lateral line erosion.

Congrats on entering the world of Snakehead Keeping. I got one last week from a local shop. It was sold as an Emerald Snakehead. I was only introduced to them a couple of weeks ago when a mate got a small Rainbow. I will try to add a pic of mine, if there are any experts among you. Mine cost £80 and is about 10 inches long. I have kept piranhas and African lake Cichlids of and on since my teens. I had a couple of weeks to study up on them. Not a lot out there and so many variations. Let me know what you think. He is alone in a 3 ft tank but I'm sorting a 4ft by 18" tank shortly. I have seen them kept in small groups or with other large hardy fish. Learning all the time.

Hi,

sp. Emerald is a high altitude variant from the stewartii species group.
Strictly subtropical !!! Keep 'em in cold conditions, do not overfeed them !!! And add lots and lots andl lots of huiding places, cause the coldwater stewartiis can really be very aggressive.

Cheers
