CHANNEL AND BULLHEAD CATFISH?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have to somewhat agree that the channels get big but i only see them when fishing average two to three pounds. but they do get big. and bullheads are a fish that eat everything they can and tend to be more aggressive than a red tail cat at the same size. hope this helps. and i have raised both but didnt have room so i put them in there own pond. have not seen them since.

You wont be dissappointed by either of these species. Bullheads are great in aquariums but will probably be too small to hang with your red tail catfish. The channel catfish on the other hang would be acceptable. My only worry would be temperment as i've never seen the 2 kept together. They both would eat the small foods though. good luck!

i had 2 channels an rtc a tsn a bullhead a hybrid and a niger all in one tank. they lived well together until the biggest channel reached about 18in, then he got mean. all the other cats ranged from 18 to 8in, the bullhead being the smallest and the channel left the bull alone for the most part but started picking on my albino channel and my RTc, leaving huge bite marks down the side. i feel the channels get a little territorial, so if you do house them with your other cats make sure youve got hiding places. I put the two channels and the bullhead in the pond last winter. but with the weight of the snow ontop of the ice it pushed all of the water out and they died. he was 22in

channel cats can be kept in the warmer waters, as long as its only between say 70-75

I think a channel and the RTC would work good together if they were about the same size. A combo I saw in a tank in Kansas city was a albino Flathead and an RTC once, they seemed to be getting along good.

Total we have:
2 RTC
2 TSN
1 RTCxTSN hybrid
2 Wild caught from Nevada Channel Catfish
2 Wild caught from Arizona Flat bullhead

All of these are currently in my 1500 2x4 build,
We have started the idea of making the 8 foot square
into a 12 foot by this summer,
I also have 8 Oscars in this pond with everyone
the pond itself is in my garage, we have a total of 5
300 watt heaters going i am keeping it so far a steady
81 degrees constantly,
all catfish range from 10'' to 24''
10 being my smallest bullhead,

We have considered a small Albino channel catfish
from the LFS to raise, but if im not mistaken
these are Asian correct?
My other channels have been caught locally, so im not sure
yet on compatibility, as ive always thought asian Catfish
are always aggressive,
currently have we absolutely no aggression in the pond
in all reality theres really no movement in there unless
its time to feed,
Can you guys think of anything else i can put in there?
Were considering an additional RTCxTSN hybrid,

Are you referring to Asian Red Tail Cats?
If so I have one currently and had one in the past. Gave him away at 14 inches was the least aggressive of all my fish-though others will tell you differently.
Have one in a 240 grow out with a RTC, Marbled Achara Cat, TSN, and Albino Channel Cat-get along really well. Once again I hear how aggressive ARTC are-have yet to see that?
