Chiller?

Thanks for your post, andy!

I think, that I order one, not so powerful chiller to chill water little, maybe aqua medic titan 500. Or do you want recommend some chiller?

How I can make a brook in my tank?

How it works if I use same stream pumps than in salt water aquarium (tunze)?
Or how I can do it? Or do you can give a weblink (in this forum) where someone else make "brook/river aquarium".

I have think to use 150W HQI light in "summer" (water temperature about 70F), and in winter (temperature about 60F) maybe one 36W tube (T8), and LEDs. Or only LEDs.

What kind of filtration is best for me, external filters or something else? (maybe eheim 2260 / fluval fx5 / tetratec ex2400) (tank is 300 gallons)

Making a stream tank is very easy, especially with a narrow tank like yours. You just have to have water outflow on one end, intake on the other end.

You can set up the stream independently of the filters, like this: http://www.loaches.com/articles/river-tank-manifold-design. Or you can simply place the filter outflows at one end, and the intakes at the other end.

With a tank that large I recommend a sump, but canister filters will work as well. Do you want to grow plants in the tank? If not, which lights you choose does not matter very much.

That tank size is just a plan, do you think, that 118" * 20"(high) * 31" (300cm*50cm*80cm) are good for 'brook'?

I don't think that normal filters can blow enough stream, example Eheim 2260 blow 450 gallons per hour(?) (= 1900 L / h)

In Finland we don't use sump in fresh water aquariums, I know one aquaristic, who has 375 gallons tank, and he has sump in his tank.
I think, that sump is hard to make, with PVC tubes etc... And hole in the tank...

Sumps are easy to build and work just fine on freshwater tanks. There are several threads in the DIY section of this forum explaining how to build sumps. Are you buying a premade tank? The manufacturer will probably drill holes and install overflows for you if you ask.

I think your target turnover/hour in your tank should be 5-10 times total volume, so about 1500-3000 gph. If you go with a sump, just use a pump that provides you with that flow rate.

If you use a canister filter, you can combine it with the type of setup in the loaches.com link. Place several powerheads and the canister's outflow together at one end to get the flow you want.

I've got a 1/6 horsepower chiller in a 125 gallon tank that keeps it at 52 degrees for salmon fry. Don't know if that helps.

Horsepower... That is probably (1/6) ~123 watts. And the tank is ~500 L
52 F = ~11 C
Heh, these units are odd for me.... But I try survive! :screwy:

Thanks for information!

And, I have planned these fishes and crabs:

Thymallus thymallus
Coregonus lavaretus
Salmo trutta fario
Leuciscus idus
Alburnus alburnus
Leuciscus leuciscus
Lampetra planeri
Phoxinus phoxinus
Cottus gobio
Noemacheilus barbatulus
Cottus poecilopus
Astacus astacus

And this one is "predator" : Lota lota

Here are the setups I was talking about:

with sump

with canister and powerheads

It sounds like it will be a fantastic tank. Are you sure all those fish are compatible? Over here at least Cottus are the favorite food of trout.

I think, that I use alternative 2. Canister filters.

Yes, I know, that Cottus are trouts food, but brook trout Salmo trutta fario don't grow so big, and it eat example bugs etc.

Maybe 3 Thymallus thymallus
6 Salvelinus alpinus
1 Leuciscus idus
8 Phoxinus phoxinus
6 Alburnus alburnus
6 Cottus gobio
