Cichla Temensis Breeding Diarie's

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oldie and sad thread. But i am back on breeding temensis mission. I got two male temensis and one female temensis now. Of course still growing them out but i am on a mission where i left off years ago and that is to breed temensis. Should i continue this thread with new fish or should i create a new thread on the new temensis documenting as they grow and onto hopefully spawning? let me know what y'all think.

Keep it rolling Mike, good to hear your back on the mission.

Thanks Man. Been doing a lot more research around temensis specificly. I already got some interesting behavior from the temensis that i have seen with largemouth bass around spawning time. I will post that footage and some info tomorrow.

nice vid!

Temensis in general are true monsters. Besides thier fast growth rate and monster size. They eat a lot of food. I currently have 3 temensis 2 males and 1 female. Soon i will cut it down to 1 male/1 female. My hopes are one day they will spawn. But in the meantime i thought it would be cool to document all this. The 2 males i had for a few months now. Got them around 2-3 inches and they are now 9". I recently acquired my female tem from a fellow MFK member. She is 11" and is a beast. I do have them in a 300g and they will be in a bigger tank hopefully by spring if not next summer. But let's talk current set up. I have them in a 300g (8x24x30) sump filtration. Also a wave maker. Maintenance is simple. Weekly 50-80% water change. Just depends on water condition. I change filter socks about every 3-4 days. I currently feed them cut up shrimp, cod and tilapia. I add seachem garlic guard and vita chem to their food. I stopped feeding pellets do to pellets messing up the water and it creates more waste from the fish. Anyhow i believe thats all i have for now. I am excited as this will be a learning experience. In the mean time here is a couple pics. How often should i update this thread? Some temensis stay plain as far as color goes so it might be sometime for the males to show different colors while the female is showing some color already.

Stay Tuned!

Just a small noticeable coloration update. my female temensis "Destiny" her dorsal fin is getting more blue. For 11" this is the first tem i seen in person with this much coloration potential at this size. From my research the females mature quicker than males. My males are 2" smaller then destiny so of course time will tell. From my research i am getting mixed feed back for male temensis mature age/size. I read that a study did find sexually mature temensis as small as 13" making them possibly a year old. But read to that males take 3 years to mature. Defiantly a learning curve. Also going to try and mimic "Blackwater" soon. I want to try and mimic the amazons water as much as possible. Some areas of the amazon are crystal clear but from searching on google and ig etc most temensis i seen were in blackwater areas. Once i have more to update i will post it here.

Temensis New diet is, All previously frozen foods. Shrimp, Krill, Halibut, Salmon, Cod, Tilapia & Gut Loaded Shad. The gut loaded shad is basically i make a mesh from pellets and using a syringe i inject it into the shad. Each day is a different food. One day Cod and next day shrimp and so on. I want a all around good variety of a diet. I only feed them once day usually between 1pm and 3pm. Water change schedule also changed to every 3rd day i do a 20% water change. Roughly 60g. I been using noral cold tap water. My heaters are awesome and take about 30min to heat back up to 82. Temp drops 2-3 degrees so not a major change. I noticed by using cooler water it excites them in a good way lol. But with that said i dont fill up with cold water super quick. i feel in slowly so it doesnt really shock them. No more noticeable changes in colors as of yet same for size. No noticeable growth yet. Now from personal experience i have had female cichla lay eggs and no males fertilized them. Just something triggered her to lay eggs. I am curious to know if this can happen with temensis as well since i know destiny will mature before the male. Anyhow feel free to post feedback or questions etc.
