A lot of the males will develop a nauchal hump with age. This guy is about 13" and is tolerant of smaller fish but not fish his own size anymore..He is washed out a bit now with colors as he is getting older but definately a character. They usually do all right in communities and definately add color.:)

How old are all your fish, are they in the same tank, and what size tank/s?

Very nice fish IMO. I'm also amazed how you keep your substrate so clean.

Thanks, I'm really happy with the two very small ones that I got in yesterday. Probably exactly an inch long. They keep together as the slightly larger Geophagus Steindachneri female likes to chase them a little bit, but nothing too serious. Beautiful pictures to all, thanks for posting them.

Another question, how big do they get before they start to color up, and how long before they can be sexed??
Thanks in advance.

I think you feed your synspilum too much shrimp which bring out the blue/black pigment on him. A balance diet including veggie pellets will bring out his red coloration.

Here is mine for comparison.
