Can anyone tell me why my electric blue acara and firemouth try to mate. I dont think they can have fry being totally diffrent. But ive had problems in the past when my firemouth and convict bred, the tank was full of cross breed fry

Quick update, the firemouth has produced eggs and is on guard. But the acara is swimming around the tank as normal

As far as I know, Central American cichlids can't breed with South American Cichlids. In this case the FM is the CA and the Acara is the SA. It just doesn't work.

Convicts and FireMouths are possible to breed, but the Fry are really messed up. They can breed since they are both CA Cichlids.

Does the FM get agressive to the Acara during this time? Usually, both parents would Guard the eggs, one patrolling the area and the other in the cave guarding the eggs. I'm thinking that they actually didn't breed, the FM just layed eggs. The eggs will turn white or sometimes fungusy and the parent would eat them, that's what happened to my female BP.

Also, may I know what is your complete tank stocking?

The firemouth lets the acara close but not close enough to eat the eggs, but ive just noticed the firemouth has started to eat the eggs as you said it might. My tank consists of a firemouth, acara, rainbow cichlid which has been getting chased constantly so will be removed. It also has 8 congo tetra and a bristlenose plec, the tank is new and has only been set up for just over a month. I think its about 63 us gallon or 240ltr

Both species come from the same family, and sub-family, and at some time in their distant path of evolution may have evolved from the same basal single ancestor.
They are both substrate spawners, and so in the absence of suitable mates of their own species, may do what nature needs them to do to pass on genes.
There are incidences of certain South and Central American pairings, that have produced viable fry.
Whether yours will or not is not certain,, because they are from different tribes.
One of the viable fry instances reported has been from the Uruguayan Australoheros "red Ceibal, spawning with the Nicaraguan Amatitlania "convict type", even though they are both from different tribes.
I personally think its a good idea to let the eggs and /or fry be eaten, there are already too many unidentifiable mutts out there.

Thanks for the help, the last thing i want is a bunch of deformed half breeds. When my firemouth and convict bred i had to remove the convict so the other fish could get near the fry to get rid of them. I took the convict to my local fish dealer so there would be no more offspring. Then this happened
