CICHLIDS IN FLORIDA RIVERS?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They were silvers, food is what can be gathered in a location.

Sadly in Mexico the main food fish there is tilapia, they were apparently released there years ago and they are found in huge numbers. They gill net them by the hundreds then cook them "en disco". It is basically frying them whole after scaling them, there is no batter involved, pretty good though with lots of beer.

Hummm so keeping monster fish could pay off. When your fish get too big just sell them for food. Haha. That would keep them out of the water ways.

Jk My fish are my pets. I read that Jack dempseys are also a tasty treat in there home land. It's funny how we see these fish as pets and most never think to eat them. But really our priced fish is nothing more then dinner for some people.

I live in lake tahoe and fisher men have brought Bass up and let them go in the tahoe keys. They are a native intruduced fish.

What about the recent "winter freeze" in Fl? Think that could have killed off a lot of the farel tropical cichlids? It certainly affected fish farms.

I doubt it. I believe the fish ponds are fairly shallow so the temperature would be changed more rapidly than a large canal or other bodies of water.

Check out these two threads about the die off. All animals took a hit...

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the burmese and rock python epidemic in the Everglades. Does anyone know if the recent freeze has impacted their populations? As much as I like constrictors, I certainly hope so.

Know whats an epidemic? Bulldozers, condos, parking lots, shopping malls. A few pythons really arent that big of a deal. Florida politicians and media are nuts for blowing the invasive issue up so much while gopher tortoises are buried alive and other species lose habitat daily

yea, tons of dead fish, iguanas, and the sort, even native fish and animals have died off.

and about the ones dude post on the pirahnas, they fond some in a lake near my house, FWC was so worried theyd spread elsewhere that they poisoned the whole lake killing every last fish. :(
