Whoops! Got ninja'd...cool that you got in touch with mattiej.

An algae scrubber works to keep nitrates and phosphates down, but it pulls, and wont replenish EE's in a tank. H2o changes are necessary.

Last note, after reading through a couple threads on the matter, it looks like that actually might be (I think it probably WILL be) more expensive than just buying your salt in bulk. Plus whatever your time is worth.
What are EE's?

essential elements
Which elements are essential?

The reason I ask is because everyone says you can't simply do top offs to compensate for evaporation, because you'll build up a dangerous amount of elements in the water, but apparently the fish take in these elements anyways? Or are we talking about different elements?

There are about 21 Elements that are "essential" for all life. (These are broken down more specifically for plants, animals, different groups, etc.)

You get the picture.

Somethings are toxic to animals. (Copper) If you had (copper) pipes in your house, you would slowly be adding copper to a system that if no h2o changes were performed would build up a "leathal" level of copper.

These were just used as examples. Does that makes sense?

No worries mate, Shark_curious, have you come up with a recipe you feel good using that will beat out IO bulk salt? If you bought in bulk I have to assume it would be even lower than $0.25...which is really cheap.
