I have two common Plecos in my tank both about 8 inch and purchased at the same time when about 1 inch. Over the last few days the smaller one has changed colour from a chocolate brown to a yellow brown.

Any ideas on what would be causing this and do I have anything to worry about or is this normal as they mature?

If it's a problem what would be causing it and how to I save him?

Are you sure it's a common? I'm no expert on plecos but I've never seen a common with spots like that.

Those are not commons they are L001/Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus .

After looking for months I finally found some and bought one last week.

As far as the color change, it could be somewhat normal as I've seen many plecos change their shade of color over time. He could be getting picked on a little bit too.

I'd just keep watching him but if there are no visual signs of him being in trouble I would not worry too much about it.

Here's a link, check out all the pics and see some color differences in them

Common pleco is a term that covers far more than just one or two species. It is a name for a basically shaped and colored pleco. The fish you go is indeed a common pleco, more specifically L001 Pterygoplichthys joselimaianus.

Actually they are one of the many, MANY species of common pleco. 15 years ago common plecos were a wide variety, 10 years ago they were mostly Hypostomus Glyptoperichthys and Pterygoplichthys, now they are primarily Pterygoplichthys and Glyptoperichthys.
