converting a spa filter/pump unit for use on my fish tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i dont' know if it is the 2hp pump or not yet... and as for an inlet for it i was thinking pvc (capped) with a bunch of 1/16 inch slots cut in the bottom 3" of it, and small 1/8" holes drilled up and down its entire lenth length. what i really want is the cycles through the filter.

That sounds like a good start. You want lots of intake area to minimize the suction. Pretty much a reverse spray bar. The more holes you have in a spray bar the less pressure the streams of water coming out of the spray bar will have.

So today I was going through my old man's scrap pile to see if any thing was salvageable... And found a fully functional hot tub pump filter and heater unit. And a lightbulb hit me... I could turn it into a filter for my tank... What do you guys think? Says safe for use on fresh or salt water units

We run two Pentair Rainbow RTL-25s on our 300 gallon tank. Love them for mechanical filtration.

Love them so much, I'm going with six bigger RTLs on my big tank upgrade. They are extremely good at mechanical filtration.

yeah i want to put the units directly under my tank bolted to the stand... is this a bad idea?

the Pump is rated 1 1/6 hp, and at 10ft of head, has roughly 92gpm. on my 90 gallon aquarium, I'm be cycling the water in the tank every minute lol. I like this idea, let the conversion Begin!

I'm running into a few issues. now when i plug it in the pump only pumps on "low" mode. I guess i'm going to have to rig up a speed button, since it uses so sort of interrupter to adjust what speed the pump runs at.

Also, @ the person above who uses a similar setup to the one I am aiming at, does you water hit the filter before or after it hits your pump? I'm not sure If I should put the filter before or after the pump on my setup.

If you're writing about my spa filter setup, the pump draws water from the tank and then pushes the water through the spa filters, then back into the tank. So: main tank--pump--spa filters--main tank.

it works both speeds on reg 120/115/110, it just needs the switch assembly... cuz its a eco smart pump.

@pacu mom, have you considered drawing the water in this order. main-filter-pump-main?
