Pictures are not great, but they look like males to me. If there is any orange on the flanks they are female, otherwise male.
I would agree that a 40 gallon is not large enough to keep any other cichlids with your convicts. And if your convicts are indeed both males, one will likely be killed eventually. I think your best bet is to get 3 more convicts of the same size (try for all females) and wait for a pair to form, then bring any extra males (or all extra fish) back to the store. The reason I say to bring all males back, is that you may have better keeping your pair's female alive if you keep two extra females around. The two extras will be bullied most likely but will give the pair something to unite against and stop the male from killing the female (hopefully). A hide with a hole large enough for the females, but not the male, is a very good idea as well when breeding these fish.
